-Homelessness in Salt Lake County: Lay of the land and how schools can support families

Speakers:

Pastor France Davis is one of Utah's great leaders for creating socially just, caring communities. Pastor Davis marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama with Martin Luther King in the 1960s and has been a leading voice for social justice since his arrival in Utah in the early 1970s, where he has lead the Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City for the past 44 years.  

Bonnie Owens received both a Bachelors degree in Gender Studies and a Masters degree in Education, Culture, and Society from the University of Utah.  An activist by trade and an educator by profession, Bonnie has explored teaching in a variety of educative settings including formal classrooms, academic conferences, community centers, afterschool programs, and summer camps. During the school year, Bonnie teaches K-6 students in the Promise South Salt Lake Afterschool Program at Woodrow Wilson Elementary.  In addition to teaching, Bonnie also coordinates Planned Parenthood's Safe at School program, which offers practical bully-prevention and response trainings to educators and others who work with LGBTQ youth and their peers

Glenn Bailey is Executive Director of Crossroads Urban Center. For over 50 years, Crossroads Urban Center has run one of the busiest emergency food pantries in Utah as well as a charitable thrift store, and has organized Utahns in political advocacy groups to make broader change.

Sally Shaum is a Producer-Director for  KUED Television. She has produced/directed documentaries on Utah's children, war veterans, refugee, youth, theSouthern Paiutes of Utah and homeless issues. Most recently she produced "A Home of Their Own", a documentary about homeless families in Salt Lake County.
